PREPARING FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT
✳️ All signer(s) must be physically present with their valid and current form of identification (CA Driver’s License or U.S. Passport/U.S. Passport Card are most common; see below for additional information). Photocopies/pictures/scans of identification are not acceptable.
✳️In order for any notary act to be carried out, the CA Secretary of State requires that all signer(s) must be able to actively and openly communicate with the Notary Signing Agent. Translators/translations are not allowed. Dot and Dash Mobile Notary does not offer translation services and only speaks English.
✳️ Please ensure to print the document that requires notarized signature(s) in its entirety and have it out and ready for cursory review. The document(s) may not be missing pages and must be completely filled out entirely before the scheduled appointment (excluding the signature portion).
✳️ If signer(s) have any legal questions regarding the document(s) that will be signed, please reach out to a legal professional prior to our appointment. CA Notaries Publics may not provide any legal advice.
For standard notarizations, at minimum, the following documentation must be presented by each signer in person, and issued within the last 5 years:
Tier I Identification
CA Driver's License or Non-Driver CA Identification Card
U.S. Passport or U.S. Passport Card
Inmate I.D. Card issued by the California Department of Corrections
The identification options listed below in Tier II must be current or issued within the last 5 years in order to be acceptable to perform any notarial act. I.D. options listed below with an asterisk (*) must also contain a photograph, physical description, serial number, and signature of the bearer/signer per the CA Secretary of State regulations.
Tier II Identification
Driver's License issued by an appropriate public agency from Canada or Mexico*
Driver’s License or official Non-Driver's Identification Card issued by a U.S. state other than California.* Note: Driver's License from Guam, Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico or other U.S. Territories are not acceptable forms of identification per the California Secretary of State.
A U.S. Military I.D.*
A valid foreign passport from the applicant’s country of citizenship*
An employee ID issued by an agency or office of the state of California or a California city, county, or city and county*
An identification card issued by a federally-recognized tribal government*
A valid consular identification document issued by a consulate from the applicant’s country of citizenship that meets specific requirements. California Notaries may accept I.D. cards issued by foreign consulates as proof of a signer's identity, but there are some restrictions. Note that "Matricula Consular" I.D. issued by the Mexican Consulates do not meet these requirements and cannot be accepted as satisfactory evidence of a signer's identity in California.
In the event a Signer is unable to present valid identification, the oath or affirmation of one or two credible witnesses may be utilized. More information related to the credible witness procedure maybe found here.
